August 1990; this surely has to be one of the most important days in modern competitive surfing history. Not only did Kelly Slater make his WCT debut at the Quiksilver Lacanau Pro in France, but he did so in a heat with Tom Curren, his idol. The significance of this is huge as Slater announced, through his surfing, the new school of the sport. Although Curren won the heat with his signature smooth surfing, and went on to win the WCT that year, Slater went on to dominate the sport for over two decades. Here it is on video:
